True Meaning of Christmas

by Kevin Surbaugh (message derived from Bible.com)

With Christmas approaching I thought it might be a great time to look at what the Bible has to say about the true meaning of Christmas. This also is the message that I will be preaching this afternoon, when I speak to a group of men at church.

God is a giver, not a taker. Throughout Scripture, we find evidence of His great generosity towards His creation. From the beginning of time as we know it, when He called forth Creation--when He gave existence to things that had never before existed--we can see the true heart of God. He literally gave of Himself to make each one of us.
"then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature."

- Genesis 2:7
The very nature of God is to give, to create, and to bless His creation.

Even the secular story of Santa Clause is symbolism of God's giving. How? It may not be the traditional meaning, but for many Christian families that don't want to tell false stories of Santa to their children have devised a way of using Santa Clause to illustrate God's love and the true meaning of Christmas. You see Santa has a big heart and gives freely to all the good boys and girls, or so the legend says. In the same way, as John 3:16 says, God loved the world so much that he gave his only son, Jesus Christ whose birth we celebrate on Christmas Day. You see Santa and God both give cheerfully and freely and likewise God asks that we give in the same way.

Unfortunately, many of us are so self-absorbed and greedy for gain that we do not even have the eyes to see the countless gifts that God has already worked into our lives. Yet, God wants us to be givers too. He created us to be like Him--to pour of ourselves into other people, and to reciprocate His love for us. God created us with the power to be able to give back to Him! When I really stop and think about this, it truly amazes me--that God--the sum of ALL good things, who holds ALL power and authority, would humble Himself in this way. He didn't make himself entirely independent of His creation, or set Himself up as a mere casual observer of humankind, though He certainly had the power to do so. Instead, He allowed Himself to love us to the point where our returned love would be a blessing to Him. Each one of us, little and insignificant as we are, has been given the profound gift of the ability to bring joy to the heart of God. It is extremely humbling to me, when I stop and consider that God has thus set the laws of His creation into motion. That the One who is Love personified, would actually be blessed by the love that I could offer Him. This is the greatest gift of all, and it is given to every human being who has ever lived or will live--the ability to give of ourselves to God and to each other. Without this gift, life would be very empty indeed.

In the mad rush of the holiday season, the true meaning of giving is often forgotten. What is meant to be a time of blessing and joy becomes instead, a time of stress and depression. Recently, as I was praying for the church and the nations of the world, a great sorrow began to rise up inside of me. God has placed so many gifts within His church. Each member of the Body of Christ has been given strategic giftings and a unique place that none other can fulfill in quite the same way. Yet, so many are not moving into their rightful place. They are afraid to use their gifts, or they think their gifts are insignificant. Many are secretly hurt and angry at God because they feel they haven't been given anything remarkable. They mistake God's anointing and talent in certain individuals as a sign of God's approval of those people, and they assume their "lack" is a sign that God doesn't love them as much as He loves others...that God is somehow "prouder" of other people than He is of them. Because of this fear and resentment, they are crippled in taking their proper place in God's kingdom, falling short of the gift they were created to be.

Others are busily using their gifts, and by their own efforts are successful in the eyes of the world. Maybe they have a thriving ministry. Maybe they are making good money. Maybe they have the respect and admiration of those around them. This doesn't necessarily mean, however, that their actions are a blessing to the heart of God, or that they are even obeying what God has told them to do. Ecclesiastes 4:4 says "And I saw that all labor and all achievement spring from man's envy of his neighbor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind." Many are so busy creating their own kingdoms, that the kingdom of God suffers a great lack. Their pride and busy occupations have blocked the measure of their true worth in God's kingdom.

Who will fill these missing places in the body of Christ? Even now as we go about our daily lives, all creation groans in frustration, waiting for the sons of God to be revealed (Romans 8:19-22). There is so much work to be done, and so few who are willing to do it. John 4:35-36 says ".... I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together." God intends both the sower and the reaper to share the same joy of the harvest. There should be no competition among God's faithful servants, no jostling each other for the "prime" positions, no envy or personal ambition. If we truly love the Lord, our only goal should be to bless Him, to serve Him, and to advance His kingdom.

As I was praying, I saw a vision of the Lord, manifested in the person of someone I love very much. In the vision, I saw this person laying in bed, exhausted after a hard day's work. The Lord said to me "What do you think she would like right now? How could you bless her?" I could instantly see that a cup of hot tea and a home-cooked meal would be just as much, if not more of a blessing to her than whatever big, distant work I could conjure up to show her my love. Immediately, I could see what God was trying to show me. We are created like Him. If we appreciate a "small" gift given in love more than the fanfare of a "big" gift given in insincerity, how much more does God?

As the vision continued, I could see Jesus sitting alone by a road with people running up and down it. They were all very busy. Some were stopping and chatting with Him for a moment here and there, but as I overheard their conversations, they were mostly to inform Jesus of what they wanted from Him, or what they were going to do for Him. One man in particular ran up to him. "Oh, Jesus, I'm so excited," he cried. "I'm off to tell the world all about you!" Quickly he ran off before Jesus could say anything at all. My heart broke, as I saw Him there, sitting by Himself. Yes, He wanted to bless those people with things beyond their wildest imagination. Yes, He wanted them to find fulfillment in serving Him. But what He really wanted most of all was for those people to come and sit with Him and talk awhile...to hold His hand and look deep into His eyes...to share their dreams and sorrows, and to hear His joys and sorrows...to let Him simply give His love to them. In all their mad rush to give and get, they missed the greatest treasure of all, sitting right in front of them.

So much of what we do for God is with mixed motives for our own personal fulfillment. We all want to have a purpose and reason for living. We all hope that if we were to die tomorrow, we would leave a legacy of some kind behind us. Yet for most of us, this becomes the end to which we live. Sadly, when we make anything other than God our reason for living, that thing will become an idol in our lives. Even if it is a good thing, like a ministry or a mate, it can still never fulfill us because it wasn't designed to. It simply can't! It doesn't even have the ability to fulfill. In fact, those idols will begin to work against us, and cause us suffer spiritual barrenness. They will put us on a treadmill until we become broken-hearted and exhausted trying to keep it all alive. On the other hand, if we receive them simply as the gifts they are and continue to love God first in our lives, we will be given the ability to enjoy them, for this too is a gift. Ecclesiastes. 3:13 says "That everyone may...find satisfaction in all his toil--this is the gift of God." The key is simply to
"seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these other things will be given to you as well." - Matthew 6:33

When all is said and done, only those things which were done "as unto the Lord" will count for anything. In God's eyes, there are no "big" or "small" things done for His Kingdom. All He asks of us is to obey Him in what He tells us to do. Let us follow through and obey Him, whether His commands seem great or small. After all, it is Jesus we are talking about here! The One who left His home in glory to bleed and die a humiliating, painful for each one of us. The One who made himself vulnerable to us, by giving us the ability to bless him or hurt him. As we obey Him, we bring such joy to His heart! Then His joy, which is a strength to the spirit of man, becomes our joy as well. God is not impressed, nor is He blessed by the best of our works done in self. He is only impressed by the attitude of our hearts.

As we look around the world this holiday season, let us stop and consider Who's birthday we are celebrating. Let us not forget to offer sincere thanks to our precious, precious Lord for His many blessings in our lives. And let us show our thankfulness by our actions! Let us offer the same mercy that God has given us to those around us. Let us press deeper into the heart of God, that we may have something to offer this world besides the same old cycle of greed, pride and rebellion. Let us not be ashamed to become the servant of all, showing our love for God by laying down our rights, our plans, our time and money for the sake of others. Let us demonstrate our love to God by giving Him the very things we are afraid to lay down, trusting that He has the best plan for our lives and would never use or abuse us. Let us truly fulfill the greatest commandment, which is to
"And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." - Luke 10:27
. Each of us is destined to make a profound difference in the world. Let us not fall short of our destinies! Let us give the greatest Christmas gift that we have been afforded to give; one that we can give year-round--to bless the heart of God!

If you do not know God the way you want to, you can receive the gift of knowing Him right now. Simply pray to Him from your heart and ask him to forgive you for your sins and turning your back on Him. Romans 10:9, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the you shall be saved." Ask Him to come into your life and make you a new person, born of His spirit. You can give to Him a gift He considers more dear than anything else in the world--yourself. In return, you will receive eternal life with Him, which begins the moment you are born again. May God bless each of you richly as you seek to give unto Him your all.

Debt free – The State of Being an Independent Human Being

Guest Post by Shawn Ambrose

Human beings unlike animals aren't born free. They are bound by various relations and to various other things in life. Nowadays, debt too has become one such thing to which human beings are getting tied too. It seems to be a hard and heavy stone that has gotten tied to your leg and is pulling you down deep into the sea; into the abyss of darkness. But, the thing is that you will have to try and become debt free; and free yourself of this abyss of darkness.

Being debt free

So, what are the ways in which you can become debt free soon enough? If you really want to become debt free with ease and fastness, you will have to:

Prepare a frugal budget – First of all try to prepare a frugal budget so that you are able to save more than you can usually do. Frugality does not mean that you will have to give up on all of your luxuries. But, it is that you will have to try and lower all of the unnecessary expenditures, you will have to learn to save from whatever you are using, and you will have to change your spending style.

Lower usage of the credit cards – You will have to try and lower the usage of credit cards as these have the highest interest rates. Thus, if you miss payments, you will end up incurring high debt. Moreover, credit cards are ideal for emergency purposes. This will help you lower expenditures and thus maintain low debt levels.

Follow your expenses – It is important for you to follow all of your expenses closely so that you do not miss payments and so that you always remain within your limit and your budget.

Check your credit reports – It is better to check your credit report from time to time so that you do not miss out on any wrong listings and the right payment listings. This can otherwise lead to huge debt levels. Sometimes, wrong debts get listed on your credit report and it heightens your debts. Again sometimes, even if you make payments, the payment may not get updated on your credit report. So, you need to check out these and in order to do that you will have to get copies of your credit reports.

Make on-time debt payments – You will have to try and make the on-time debt payments on any of the accounts that you have. This helps you maintain low debt level and thus you are able to become debt free soon enough.

Comparing Stores "Price Match" Policies

by Kevin Surbaugh

WalMart recently announced that they would retroactively price match their competitors (with certain exclusions) during the holiday season. This got me thinking with several companies offering to price match how do the companies everyday price match policies compare with each other.
According to their website:
We’re committed to providing low prices every day. On everything. So if you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, tell us and we’ll match it. Right at the register.
The site also says that they will match "buy one, get one" (BOGO) offers as long as the price is mentioned in the ad. Please be aware that when they say identical they mean it. It must be the same brand, size, model, flavor, color, everything must match 100% to the competitors ad.
Exclusions include the following:
We DO NOT match the price in the following types of competitor ads:
  • Items that require a separate purchase to get the ad price
    • example: "Buy [item A] to get [item B] for $C"
  • Items with no actual price that require a purchase to get free product
    • example: "Buy both [items A & B] to get [item C] for free"
  • Items that require a purchase to get a competitors' gift card
    • example: "Buy [item A] to get a $B gift card
  • Buy one, get one free (BOGO) ads with no actual price given
  • Going out of business or closeout prices
  • Percentage off
    • example: "All mascara, 40% off"
  • Competitors' private label price promotions
We do not honor:
  • Ads when the actual price for items cannot be determined.
  • Internet pricing
  • Misprinted ad prices of other retailers
  • "Going out of business" sales or "close out" prices
- according to the WalMart website

With our Low Price Promise you know you're always getting a great deal when you shop Target stores.

Our promise to guests:

  • We compare prices on over 25,000 items, so you'll know you're saving. Learn about our Store Price Adjustment policy.

  • We'll match the price found in any competitor's printed ad* for an identical product.

  • To help you save even more, we accept manufacturer's coupons. We happily accept one manufacturer's and one Target coupon per item. View our Store Coupon policy.

  • We organize our stores to make great deals easy to find.

  • One-stop shopping saves you time, money and all that driving around.

  • We would never ask you to compromise quality for low prices.
- according to the Target website

Even though there is no Kmart in my area anymore, I tried to look for Kamrt's policy but could not find one. I am not sure if Kmart (which owns Sears) has the same policy as the company it bought a few years ago, but Sears policy says
If you find a lower price on an identical branded item with the same features (in Consumer Electronics identical brand and model number) currently available for sale at another local competitor retail store, Sears will match that price plus, give you 10% of the difference. Just bring in the original advertisement to a sales associate at the time of, or within 14 days after, your purchase.
There you have it. What do you think? Which policy do you think is better?

Thanksgiving Day Thoughts

by Kevin Surbaugh

Tomorrow we gather will gather to have thanksgiving dinner together, as we should  spend time with our families. But a growing number of stores are attempting to put greed before family.  For several years grocery stores have been upon for limited hours on Thanksgiving, but department stores have been closed. Now a number of grocery stores have found customers still come in on Thanksgiving, so they have extended the hours they are open that day. Some not even closing early at all. However, it is the department stores that concern me more. There are a group of stores that are banking that you will leave your family and shop their stores on Thanksgiving. This is a disgrace.  Thanksgiving is sacred. It is a time for families to get together and be thankful for what they have.  Something we really should be doing everyday of our lives.  My suggestion, ignore the stores. Don't let them be profitable on Thanksgiving day. If they see that sales are poor, they will return to the family and traditional black Friday sales. Don't let these greedy department stores destroy the family anymore then they already are.

In addition, Thanksgiving is reportedly the number one (1) day for phone calls. However, i wonder what they are talking about? Are they calls of thanksgiving or just chit chat because it is Thanksgiving Day? Here is an idea. Why not call someone you haven't talked to forever and offer thanks for something they have done.

Example:
  1. Call your fourth grade teacher and thank her for teaching you science. Because of her you became Molecular Biologist.
  2. Call your best friend in high school and thank them for being a friend during those years.
  3. What other ideas do you have? Why not make those calls (assuming they are still living)  and offer thanks to someone this thanksgiving.?

In conclusion I would like to say Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for reading my blog.

Extreme Couponing Meets the Prince of Thrift -- Sorta

I continue to be intrigued by "Extreme Couponing". I have finally seen some re-runs of the shown and created a new shopping list that allows for the inclusion of coupons along with the list. The list is designed more to list the specific items that you want and the quantity that you wish to purchase as well as how many coupons you have. Like my earlier shopping list, you can fill this one out online and then print it out.
With all this in mind I wondered what the different coupon policies were. So below I have listed the five major retailers that does business in Texas, although only four of them does business outside the state of Texas. Those four are all Nationally known retailers (although in some parts of the country they may be known by other names).

  1. Kmart

  2. Randall's (Safeway, Vons, Carrs, Dominick's, Pavilions)
    Manufacturer and Store Coupons:
    1. We will redeem coupons only for the specific items included in our customer's purchase transaction. The redemption value will be as stated on the coupon, unless that value yields a final price for such item less than zero; if application of the redemption value yields a price less than zero, the coupon will be redeemed only for the amount that yields a zero price (our customer cannot net a cash credit or payout from a coupon purchase).

    2. Paper coupons must be presented at the time of the purchase transaction. We will accept only coupons issued by Safeway or the manufacturer of the relevant product. We will not accept photocopies of coupons.

    3. Coupons are subject to advertised offer limitations and all other limitations and restrictions on the applicable coupon or product.

    4. Coupons may not be applied against any free item received in any offer.

    5. Coupons have no cash value.

    6. Safeway will not accept manufacturer coupons (including, but not limited to, coupons issued through a Catalina or other in-store coupon dispenser) that display another retailer's logo or name unless such coupon is for a specific item with the same product identifiers as the product included in our customer's purchase transaction.

    7. We will not accept coupons unless they have an expiration date. Expired coupons will not be accepted.

    8. We will not accept coupons that, in the determination of Safeway personnel, appear distorted or blurry or are altered in any way.

    9. Sales taxes will be applied in accordance with the law of the applicable state, regardless of any coupon or other discount that may apply to the purchase transaction.

    10. All applicable bottle and packaging deposits on the purchased and free items must be paid by the customer.

    11. Safeway reserves the right to refuse any coupons at its discretion.

    12. Purchase reward thresholds (if any) will be calculated based upon customer's final price (after deducting Club Card savings and all other discounts and savings) before deductions for any manufacturer coupons. As an example (and not as an offer), if a $10 minimum purchase is required for a customer reward, a customer's order at full retail would be $12, a Club Card discount of $1.75 applies, and a manufacturer's coupon of $1 applies, the customer would be given credit for a $10.25 purchase, and would be eligible for the reward (assuming compliance with all other requirements) even though the customer's cash payment would be only $9.25. The manufacturer's coupon would not be deducted from the total for purposes of determining reward eligibility. Some of the policies I am actually astonished at. Which ones are the best, I guess depends on your point of view. I like having coupons doubled or tripled but I like being able to get cash back. Yet few stores double anymore and the one store that allows overages makes it hard to get there since they don't double. So I guess its all a matter of perspective.

Learning not to Spend on Your Car

Guest post written by Emma Barnes

Cars are prized possessions for most people. They provide the freedom to travel directly to necessary destinations whenever required and public transport just doesn't compare. However, they also eat cash and in tough economic times, it is beneficial to make a few small changes in order to save money. It is easy to do by following these few simple suggestions.

Firstly, you need to find the cheapest car insurance available for your make and model. When people are flush with cash they often simply renew insurance with their existing provider but new insurers generally offer a discounted price and additional benefits. These potential insurers want to secure your business in a competitive marketplace and often reduce the price and offer other rewards such as breakdown cover or vacation insurance.

Research the options available to you and call the insurers to check if any online price could be discounted even further. Insurers will want to convince you there and then to take their insurance and, particularly if they have had a slow day or month, may give even more incentives. You will save money as a result and in some cases, this is a significant amount.

Secondly, consider different ways to reduce your fuel costs, which can include simple actions such as closing your windows and sunroof because this makes the car more aerodynamic and thus uses less fuel. If you have a roof rack, remove it at once as the extra weight guzzles your gas by a massive 30% quicker than if you did not have one. This goes for anything heavy, so if you're a builder, plumber or any type of handyperson, remove your tools from your car when you are not working.

Thirdly, plan your route well so that you do not take unnecessary detours and use more fuel. A sat-nav system can be a good investment as it will help you find the quickest and therefore most fuel efficient way of getting to your destination. Avoid areas that have lots of speed bumps or crossings because slowing down continuously uses more fuel.

If your route is simply to the local store for a carton of milk, consider if you can either wait to purchase the item or walk there instead. Short journeys are not cost-efficient but sometimes people simply hop in the car as a matter of routine. Walking will save you money, help the environment, burn off calories and get your heart pumping nicely, so there are lots of benefits!

Additionally, consider car sharing. Not only is this more eco-friendly, in some cities it will allow you to access special lanes that tend to move through rush-hour traffic more easily. If you car share, your passenger should help pay towards fuel costs which will help you save more money.

So, there are numerous ways to save, rather than spend on your car, from accessing the cheapest car insurance to finding the best route. These should help you save money and time so give it a go and see what a difference it will make. Good luck!

Financial News Briefly

Compiled by Kevin Surbaugh

A look around the financial markets today.
Rite Aid (RAD)
Workers in the Cleavland area ended their eight-month strike against Rite Aid (RAD), according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. According to officials with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 880 there in Cleavland they reached a three-year contract that will last until 2014.
Neither the union nor the company would reveal terms of the contract. Workers went on strike in March because they said the company, based in Harrisburg, Pa., wanted to dramatically increase the amount workers paid for health care benefits.

Union president Thomas Robertson said the union didn't want to reveal the terms of the settlement because workers in Canton, Akron and Youngstown still must vote on a similar contract.

Union officials did say the issues surrounding health care was resolved, but didn't give any further details. A spokesperson for Rite Aid called the deal "fair, and in the best interest of all parties."

Rite Aid stock rose dramatically in trading on Thursday (to close at $1.33) after a falling out between Walgreen (WAG) and Express Scripts which can't agree on a pharmacy benefits management contract. Rite Aid closed yesterday at $1.28.
Walgreen (WAG)
Barrons reports, that Walgreen (WAG) and Express Scripts (ESRX) are in a dispute over a pharmacy benefit management deal.
Walgreen (WAG) is in a dispute with Express Scripts (ESRX) over a pharmacy benefit management deal, and failure to resolve that deal could hurt Walgreen, writes Credit Suisse analyst Edward Kelly. In a note today downgrading the company to Neutral from Outperform, Kelly urges investors to consider Rite Aid (RAD) instead.
- Barrons
According to this report if this deal falls though it will force customers to have to go to other drugstores to get their prescriptions filled, which could benefit Rite Aid (RAD) and CVS Caremark (CVS)if a deal isn't reached by Dec. 31, 2011. Right now according to the media reports it is just a waiting game to see what shakes out between now and the end of the year, but the first of the year could be very jolly for Walgreen's competitors.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-B, BRK-A)

The news over the last few days was that the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett and his investment company Berkshire Hatahway had invested more then $10 billion in IBM. This is real buzz among some in the investment community, because Buffett has long had an aversion to buying technology stocks. So this purchase comes as a surprise to many. However, as The Economist points out maybe it shouldn't be such a surprise.
The Sage of Omaha earned his reputation as a tech skeptic when he judiciously avoided hot internet stocks during the dotcom bubble. It is too hard to sort out the few potential winners from the large number of start-ups that are likely to prove ephemeral, his reasoning went.
- The Economist
The article continues to explain that by splashing more than $10 billion in IBM, he is actually investing in the opposite of an transient company, seeing as IBM has been around for 100 years and is looking very healthy.

Disclosure:
The compiler of this piece owns small stakes (less then 5 shares in RAD and BRK-B) while currently owning no stakes in WAG or CVS.

Homeowner

The Author of this post is Solomon Dejesus

I made sure to shop electricity rates texas when I was getting everything together for my move. I am finally living the American dream and have bought my first home. I have to say that it has been a long time coming. I have been a renter for fifteen years and have only moved twice. My parents kept trying to talk me in to getting my own place, but I just loved where I lived and enjoyed having someone come over and fix thing ( for free). My financial advisor and I decided that purchasing a home would be in my best interest because real estate prices are low and in the long run I would be saving money by owning a home. I found a great town house. It has a lot of space and a great master bedroom. My favorite part about the house is the bathroom. It has a dressing vanity, separate shower, and a huge Jacuzzi tub. I am really excited to move in and am adjusting to the new title of “homeowner”.

New Cell Phone Service only $19/Month Unlimited

by Kevin Surbaugh

I recently learned of of a new cellphone service that would launch this month. Republic Wireless (a division of BandWidth.com) claims they will use WiFi to place calls and text whenever possible, and for backup use Sprint’s cellular network. Reportedly it will cost only $19 a month for unlimited minutes, data, and text – all with no contracts and no early termination fees.

WOW! Sounds like a deal doesn't it? But what about reliability? Sprint isn't the most reliable phone service, so to have them as a backbone doesn't entice me very much. What about handset choices? Will I be limited to a very select few choices? I can only guess. However,if you sign-up with your e-mail on their website, you’ll supposedly get a so called “special offer” on launch day, November 8 (2011). What is the "special offer"? I can only speculate. If you are interested in possibly cutting your cell phone bill check out their webpage. Please note that instead of scrolling down to read you scroll to the right.
