Engagement Rings

The other day, I began casually browsing engagement rings online, I found one for $22 at Target.com. Yes, I said $22. Of course my biggest concern is that it wouldn't be able to be re-sized to fit my girlfriends petite fingers. Not to mention, the concern that it might turn her finger green, as they say.

Then Labor Day Monday, after I got off work, she and I went to Chick-fil-a in the local mall for dinner. The reason, they were giving away chick-fil-a sandwiches to those who wore some kind of sports team apparel.

After our evening meal, we were walking past Zales, and spontaneously decided to drag her inside their store, to look at the rings. We found one that she liked that normally sales for $299 but is on sale for $189 plus $40 for lifetime protection and $10 for a 2 year theft replacement package. I must say, I certainly like that ring from Zales, but at this time is out of my price range. Still, I will have to get the ring somehow. This is an important step in my relationship with the woman, I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Of course, I will also check out a couple of other jewelers to.

  1. Wow, engagement rings. I say try pawn shops or estate sales. I love antique rings.

  2. You should spend $1000 for every 10,000 you make per year. So if you make 50,000 you should spend at least 5,000.

  3. Anonymous - where do yo get that crazy idea from? That kind of thinking would just put me in debt further.

I do like the suggestion someone from facebook made and see about putting it on Layaway. If the chosen jeweler offers that.

  4. Hi Prince - If you decided to go with Zales join www.erewards.com and take some surveys. The money you earn can go to gift certificates of $25 or $50 to spend at Zales. I use the site for Borders and currently have $46 in the account, but I'm not in the market.

Good Luck and congratulations! Be happy!

  5. I think the "guideline" has always been 2 months salary- or something like that. Now I'm not saying I agree with that. I don't encourage debt. But I consider a "cheap" engagement ring around a thousand bucks. Like a small diamond from a Zales type place.

I am married and guess what? I did not get/give my wife an engagement ring. We just have wedding bands- around $400 for both plain gold bands. I couldn't afford one and she didnt care to have one. We also didn't do this long engagement thing a lot of couples ( many breakup and seem to enjoy serial engagements without marriage) do. We knew we wanted to get married and did.

To me it's something where I think you either drop a decent amount of money or not at all. Then again, your fiancee can provide input on that. Maybe she wants a cheap engagement ring.

  6. So....it begins......the prince of thrift has been whooped by a female. Can anyone stop the bleeding?

Congratulations....but you still have time to run :)

  7. Hmmm, a $20 engagement ring? That's quite a bargain. Hope your other half appreciates it :) Great blog!

  8. The first thing out of my boyfriends mouth when he proposed to me was "I know it's gold and you wanted silver but I got it cheap on Ebay." Truthfully made me feel like crap. An engagement ring is a big deal for a girl. I didn't need an expensive ring but I wanted one that I was going to love looking at for the rest of my life. The fact that he bypassed my one request of it being silver not gold just because he got a 'good deal,' made me wonder what other feelings during our marriage would he deam non important just to save a buck. Not cool.

  9. Anonymous - very true and is why I wanted to get her thoughts. She is the same way, and she wants me to pick it out. She even suggested eBay, but I am leery of something so important being bought there.

Dedicated - thanks for the tip.

Becky - I have though of a pawn shop also. Thanks.

Greg - Yes, that is what I have heard to.

Robert - it won't be the $22 ring.

greedy_pirate - man, you need to deal with some issues. I am not going to use women for my own satisfaction. I think the last comment after all your series of comments on the last post on love and marriage, pretty well said my sentiments. Sexy momma, made some great points in that comment.

  10. Good ideal to search for a ring in your price range and not give into buying one that you will be paying off for the next 3+ years. Does keeping the blog help you with your debt free goal? I am hoping my blog will keep me motivated to get my family out of debt.

  11. I vote for the simple, plain bands, if that is what you want to do.

Someday, Kevin, when you are debt free, you can buy her a big rock!

    For CASH!

I had a nice ring when I got married, and proceeded to break off the stone with the mount. I never did find it.

Plus, bands are safer on the fingers.

There are a lot of nice bands out there.

  16. after checking numerous jeweler's only 2 had comparable prices. One was an every day price with a smaller diamond and the other was on clearance. As I mentioned in the post normally 299 on sale for 188. When I decided to go with that one, it came up in the computer as $10 less. So the deal was even better. Now, it is being sent off the be re-sized and I will have it back in 2 1/2 weeks.

Then I can officially ask her.

  17. I swear just 3 months ago was your first date! that's awesome! speaking from experience, take your time. Don't rush in to things, let things happen.

Also, can you tell us about her! what does she do? is she rich??!

    HS

  18. HS - no she isn't rich. She does have some debt, but like me she wants to get out of debt. She has 3 grown children in 2 states (Kansas and Texas) and 2 grandchildren. I will wait on telling more about her, when its more appropriate.

  19. The art deco antique engagement rings refer to the rings of 1920 to 1930. And this period was very exotic and exciting in the history of UK and the excitement was reflected in the art and jewellery of this time period.
